Students prepare for cultural festival and educational hike through historic Los Angeles neighborhood

(Boyle Heights, Los Angeles, CA) Kinder through Seventh graders at Extera Public Schools have been hard at work preparing the 3rd Annual Boyle Heights History Hike, which takes place on Saturday, June 18. This walking cultural event, which is open to the entire community, celebrates the history, art, and culture of the historic neighborhood of Boyle Heights, and will begin at 9:00am in Mariachi Plaza with a Zumba warm-up. Then, student-led groups will embark on a walking tour of the neighborhood, stopping at notable community sites that are significant to the area’s history.

“Extera students will be turning each site into a living museum featuring student-created artworks that explore themes of local history and community,” says David Rodriguez, one of the teachers responsible for the creation of this event. “Our students have been involved in an Extera-created curriculum encompassing local history, event planning, and art in conjunction with local artists, local business leaders”

The planned route will begin and end at Mariachi Plaza.

This event is free and open to the public. To learn more, visit the student-created event website at www.boyleheightshike.wix.com/boyleheightshh

BACK AND BETTER THAN EVER

The 3rd Annual Boyle Heights History Hike is back and better than ever! Last year we put together the 1st and 2nd Annual BHHH and we had a blast.  Everyone got to learn about the past, present and future of our community by looking at our pieces of art.  We had a great time learning, creating and organizing everything.

We are very excited to bring you the 3rd Annual BHHH.  There is going to be much more art work, all Extera classes are involved, more art, more history, more locations on the hike and more fun for everyone!  Walk towards the future, and along the way see some art that shows our history, come enjoy and learn with us.

When you come, bring your family, friends, neighbors, dog, cat, etc.  You'll get to learn about the past, present, and future of Boyle Heights, while enjoying some amazing art.  You will be time traveling for 1 miles.

Enjoy your Saturday with your community, meet new people and enjoy some music.

We are excited to see you there!

Why is art important in Boyle Heights?

Art is important in Boyle Heights because this city has always been a land of art since earlier times.  The city of Boyle Heights has always had art in every corner, even in the darkest places you will find a beacon of art.  It can also be important because so many people can draw and paint, and they can show how they feel and how their feelings react to art.  Also many people have been inspired by art to express themselves and be proud of their culture, nationality, their ethnicity, etc.  It can be very interesting when you walk into a place with a lot of history, you feel important, amazed and taken back.

Art is important because it talks about the history.  To many people art is very historic to them and it paints a picture of how Boyle Heights used to be.  ART IS EXTREMELY IMPORTANT FOR PEOPLE WHO LIKE THE HISTORY OF HOW BOYLE HEIGHTS WAS CREATED, AND EVEN TO PEOPLE WHO HAVE YET TO LEARN ABOUT THE HISTORY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Art is the type of thing that people usually learn about in stories or in history class, but the 3rd Annual Extera Public Schools Boyle Heights History Hike is bringing art and history to life! If you already love history, this hike will make you love it more.
